Regretting You by Colleen Hoover ~ Review

Regretting You
by Colleen Hoover
Release Date: December 10, 2019
Morgan Grant and her sixteen-year-old daughter, Clara, would like nothing more than to be nothing alike.

Morgan is determined to prevent her daughter from making the same mistakes she did. By getting pregnant and married way too young, Morgan put her own dreams on hold. Clara doesn’t want to follow in her mother’s footsteps. Her predictable mother doesn’t have a spontaneous bone in her body.

With warring personalities and conflicting goals, Morgan and Clara find it increasingly difficult to coexist. The only person who can bring peace to the household is Chris—Morgan’s husband, Clara’s father, and the family anchor. But that peace is shattered when Chris is involved in a tragic and questionable accident. The heartbreaking and long-lasting consequences will reach far beyond just Morgan and Clara.

While struggling to rebuild everything that crashed around them, Morgan finds comfort in the last person she expects to, and Clara turns to the one boy she’s been forbidden to see. With each passing day, new secrets, resentment, and misunderstandings make mother and daughter fall further apart. So far apart, it might be impossible for them to ever fall back together.

Publisher: Montlake

ALL THE FEELS! I was aware of the main plot twist since I read the blurb beforehand. However, I was not prepared for the emotions this creation would rip out of me. Wow!!! This book shattered a whole world so fast, but the way they melded it back together was insanely beautiful.
There really is more like 3 stories in 1 here as we go back & forth a bit from the main characters younger years vs. present day & the mother daughter side of things. Ok, so honestly there are a few more than 3 if we really focus on each of the major pieces to this world Hoover has created, but the main players are mainly the big plot twists that grip you even though you already know they’re coming. You feel them, anticipate them, & yet they still hit you upon their reveal. Anyone who knows me KNOWS I tend to stay far away from the books that shatter your heart & soul to the very core, but their are a few authors who manage to do so in such a beautiful way you simply can not deny them access to do as they please. Colleen Hoover has proven she is one of them for me. I could not stop reading, did not want to put it down. This creation of hers literally took my breath away a few times as my mind attempted to catch up to my emotions. Again, I read the blurb. I was aware. BUT the execution of what was foretold still pounced as stealthy a predator in the wild. No matter how well we may believe we have dealt with our pasts & moves on these characters prove that sometimes we choose to believe things happened one way/for another reason yet when we reflect later realize we missed key facts or ignored them all together. Minor details that had huge impact on our futures. Love this book!!!! I will definitely be reading more books by this author. I also hope she might bring us a bit more of these characters at a later date. I would enjoy an update on their life happenings very much!

Q&A with Author Colleen Hoover

You are ‘label-less’ in the fact that you write in several genres. Readers never know what to expect next. If someone asks, how do you label yourself?
When I self-published my first novel I had no idea what genre to put it in. I thought I had written a drama but it turns to that I had written a romance. I’ve learned a lot since then, but I still don’t put a lot of weight in genre when I write. When your best friend is begging you to read a book, it’s not going to matter what genre it is when someone you trust is passionate about the story.

To keep all of your stories and characters straight, you must be very organized.
I’m the most disorganized person you will ever meet! I have no schedule. I can’t wake up before nine in the morning. I probably don’t go to bed until like three in the morning. I usually work about 16 hours a day.

What happens if you get blocked when you are writing?
If I get stuck writing, I go for a drive and play music. Music really helps me plot. I love The Avett Brothers, X Ambassadors, Airborne Toxic Event...I could go on and on.

What can you tell readers about your latest release Regretting You?
I would spoil it if I told you about it! Most of my books are like that. I can’t say what they are about or it spoils it. But I can say that Regretting You is told from a dual point-of-view centered on the inner lives of both a teen and adult protagonist.

Sounds like lots of different types of readers will be interested!
Absolutely. I wanted to write a book that bridged the gap between young adult and contemporary romance so that mothers can read with their daughters. I think it’s exciting to see people sharing reading experiences.

He stops and meets my gaze, then bends down and grabs a mound of snow, packing into a tight ball. He takes a step back and winds his arm, throwing the snowball straight and fast. It smacks against the metal sign on the far end of the small pond near a cluster of benches, breaking off into a multitude of pieces.

He wipes his hands off on his pants. “Give it a try.”

I shake my head. “No way, I throw like a girl.”

His picks up a mound of snow and packs it together, forming a perfect sphere. He hands me the snowball and stands behind me, pressing his body against mine. My heartbeats thump against my chest, causing a surge of adrenaline to rush through my veins. I tremble, holding the snowball in my right hand. At least I can blame the cold for my shaky arm. He runs his hand down to my wrist and pulls it back, up toward my shoulder.

He rests his head on my shoulder and talks softly into my ear. “Pull your arm back to here and step forward at the same time you throw.” He moves to the side.

Goosebumps form on my neck from his warm breath gliding against my cool skin. My stomach flutters. Here goes nothing. I stare at the metal No Parking sign and pull my arm back, throwing the snowball as I step forward. Tiny fragments of snow fly through the air. A direct hit.

I clap my hands and bounce up and down on my toes. “Holy crap, I actually did it. I didn’t think I could hit the broad side of a barn.” Dean comes over and raises his hand to give me a high five. I lunge forward and pull him into a hug, before I realize what I’m doing. My chest tightens and heat creeps across my cheek.

He wraps his arms around my waist and presses his body against mine. I step back and ease away, dropping my arms to my sides. “We better head back, I’ve still got lots of physics studying to do if I plan on passing the semester.”

He rubs the back of his neck and nods.

I slide my frozen hands into my pockets and hold them in tight fists. Note to self: when I think I’m finished embarrassing myself I’m usually wrong.

The perfect untouched blanket of snow moves into an array of chaos as we turn the corner to my apartment. My heart beats faster with each step I take forward. This walk is taking forever. If I don’t get away from Dean soon, I may end up doing something else I shouldn’t. I mean, we’re just friends. I take a deep breath and slowly exhale as we approach my driveway.

I dig in my purse and pull out my keys. “Thanks for my victory celebration.”

He places his hand in the small of my back on our way toward my steps. “First of many.” His hand moves to my waist.

Summersaults take over my stomach. I step onto the first step. My boot slips along the rim of the concrete edge covered in a thin layer of ice and instantly it knocks me off balance. My hands flail through the air, desperately trying to grab onto anything.

Dean jumps into action, catching me before my head smacks against the hard sidewalk. I grab onto his sculpted bicep and pull myself to my feet.

Fire burns through my cheeks, which are no doubt fire-engine red. I drop my chin to my chest and hunch my shoulders. He lifts my chin and gazes into my eyes. My heart pounds against the walls of my chest. Electric shockwaves flows through my veins. He leans in closer. My lips part and lava flows through my body. He tucks a stray strand of hair behind my ear. “I knew you’d fall for me sooner or later.” He places a soft kiss on my cheek and takes a step back, turning and walking away.

Sarah snuggled further into the warm pillows, enjoying the heat of the heavy quilts. A steady thrum thumped beneath her ear. The sound was soothing, but she couldn’t quite place what it was. She moved her arm to hook it under her pillow. Her digits froze as they skimmed over a fleshy, hard plain. Sarah jolted up, throwing the covers back. The cool morning chill took her breath away. She wrapped her arms around herself and peered down at Vincent. He lay sleeping, his chest rising and falling in even breaths.A few scars were scattered over his pecks, but, instead of taking away from his muscular torso, it made it more defined. He had a definitive six-pack and a small patch of dark hair trailed from his belly button and into the plaid pants he was wearing.Wait! What? Why am I looking at him like that?Averting her eyes, she surveyed the room. The bed was against the wall on her  side, and the foot of the bed was positioned against the wall as well. If she wanted out, she would have to crawl over Vincent. Great!Sarah bit her lip, and ran a hand through her gnarled golden locks.Vincent rolled toward her, and his arm jutted out, wrapping around her hips as he buried his face into her side. Sarah froze, her breath catching in her throat. Oh my god! What is he doing?“Stop stealing all the covers,” he murmured. Sarah’s pulse roared in her ears as she sat unmoving. After a long moment, she heard the quiet whistling of Vincent’s snore. He was asleep. Carefully, she placed her hand over his, slowly lifting his fingers so she could wiggle out of his grasp. Once free, she stood up on her side, set his arm on the bed, and tossed the covers back over him. She inhaled sharply and closed her eyes.Praying that he wouldn’t wake up, Sarah skimmed her foot over the covers, placing it on the other side of Vincent. Sarah lifted her other foot. She was almost there she just needed to get down. A part of her wanted to stay in bed and go back to sleep in his comforting embrace. But the other part, found it unnerving that she had slept like that with him at all. Vincent's hand shot out from under the blankets, catching her ankle in midair. A scream bubbled up her throat as she lost her balance. She landed on Vincent’s lap. His hand latched onto her hip as he rose up. She screeched as he rolled her to her back, pressing his forearm onto her throat.Sarah gasped and struggled beneath his weight.“Sarah?” Vincent asked confused, instantly moving his arm. He shot up, straddling her as his eyes widened with horror. She closed her eyes as she coughed.“God, I’m sorry. I sensed movement over me. I…”“I was trying to get out of bed. I didn’t want to wake you,” she blurted, staring up into his emerald eyes.“I didn’t even think to check. Did I hurt you?” he asked, his eyes glancing over her.“I’m okay,” she assured. “It could have been someone else.” And it could have been. At least he was prepared and on alert, even when he was resting.Vincent stiffened over her and cleared his throat. Heat crept over her face, burning all the way to her ears as she realized their position. He was nestled between her thighs, his chest pressed against hers with his face mere inches away.“Sorry,” he said as he peeled himself off of her. He got out of bed and walked to the fire, grumbling something under his breath. Vincent picked up the poker and jabbed at the ashes.Sarah lay back into the pillows for a moment. Her body was on fire and butterflies fluttered through her belly. Her body had reacted to him and that scared her.“Our clothes are dry,” Vincent said as he checked the clothesline that hung next to the fire. He slipped his green shirt on. “And we still have berries. Breakfast?” He turned to her with the wooden bowl of fruit in hand.Sarah gulped, her eyes inadvertently dipping down to take in his torso again. Realizing she was checking him out, she snapped her eyes up to his. She needed to get out of this house. “Sounds good. Then let’s go for that walk. You can show me what you found.”
