I can’t believe it is only a month away from my big day. I score a line through today’s date on the personalised calendar I received from my friend Megan. She designed the keepsake in my colour scheme of white, black and pink and personalized it with pictures of Rich and me. It is a ‘me’ gift that Megan knew I would love. It is something only she would buy since she loves giving people personalised keepsakes. She knows me so well. The calendar is used solely for the wedding, and it has all my appointments written on it.

I only have fifteen days off from my full-time job as a nurse before the wedding.   Due to the fact I’m organised, every one of those days has plans. I just can’t wait. I’m finally going to have the fairytale wedding I have always wanted. I have dreamed of this special day since I was a child. When I was little, I received a book for my dream wedding, and I used to cut out little pictures of items that I wanted and wished for. We are getting married in a church, a big old-fashioned church followed by a reception in a castle. A real castle. A big do, like what I have always imagined. It’s supposed to be our day and I want us to be the centre of attention. I think Rich would be happy just getting married in a registry office with two strangers as witnesses. He is only going along with the big wedding for my sake. As soon as I began working as a paper girl at thirteen, I started saving for my dream day. Even though it is considered tradition, I didn’t want to rely on my parents to pay for everything. I want it to be perfect with my own personal touch since I plan to marry only one time.

My mum and dad met when they were eighteen and have been together for twenty-nine years. They have three children, Samantha, my older pain in the arse sister, Martin, my baby brother, and me. Martin passed away three days after he turned six. He accidentally ran out in front of a car to get his ball. Just thinking of him makes me tear up. My only brother killed because of a ball.

Thankfully, the doctors say he died straight away so he wasn’t aware of what was happening. But I’m aware.  I remember it all too well and now wish we had not been there. It was my fault; I wanted to play at the park that day. If I had not asked to go, he would never have been there. He would still be alive. I saw everything, but wish I hadn’t. I remember the car— the colour, make, model.Everything about that day.  It was like watching a film when everything happens in slow motion. Mum ran after Martin to stop him, but she couldn’t get there in time. Understandably, she’s never gotten over losing him. She was diagnosed with severe depression and admitted to the hospital after his death. Martin was a very bright lad with a heart of gold, he loved football, and he wanted to be a science teacher when he grew up. I wish he could be here to help me on my big day and to be one of Rich’s ushers.

My older sister is the complete opposite of me. Samantha has a very kind heart, but she can be a pain at times.  She will help you do anything as long as it’s done her way and convenient for her. The only feature we share is eye colour that changes to a darker colour when we get angry. Samantha has shoulder-length brown hair while I have blonde hair. Even with only two years separating us, she looks nothing like me. If one more person tells me we look alike, I will cry. We are two different people.

About the author:
L. Chapman was born in and continues to live in North Yorkshire, United Kingdom. She has spent most of her life helping at one time, a DJ for a special needs club. Blending her love of helping others and her love of children, L dreams to one day own and operate a childcare nursery that will help mainstream special needs children with others.
In the rare times that L. is not working to help others or maniacally writing, she enjoys making a mess of things while creating beautifully detailed greeting cards. She spends time relaxing with family, friends, and good books. L. loves to travel and has been to many places in the United Kingdom; her favorite places all involve the ocean. She hopes to one day share a kiss with her happily-ever-after in the romantic shadow of the Eiffel Tower. Should she ever get over her fear of flying, those kisses may be shared in the shadows of the Egyptian Pyramids.
Ever the fussy eater, L. has never once tasted peanut butter, and she despises coffee. If you should feel the need to bribe her, it is suggested that you bring chocolate, as that is one of her know weaknesses.
