Ice Massacre ~ Review

Ice Massacre by Tiana Warner
A mermaid’s supernatural beauty serves one purpose: to lure a sailor to his death.

The Massacre is supposed to bring peace to Eriana Kwai. Every year, the island sends its warriors to battle these hostile sea demons. Every year, the warriors fail to return. Desperate for survival, the island must decide on a new strategy. Now, the fate of Eriana Kwai lies in the hands of twenty battle-trained girls and their resistance to a mermaid’s allure.

Eighteen-year-old Meela has already lost her brother to the Massacre, and she has lived with a secret that’s haunted her since childhood. For any hope of survival, she must overcome the demons of her past and become a ruthless mermaid killer.

For the first time, Eriana Kwai’s Massacre warriors are female, and Meela must fight for her people’s freedom on the Pacific Ocean’s deadliest battleground.

Not your average mermaid tale. Interesting twist on the mermaid/siren lure. Warner takes us out to sea in an adventure that took me back to a Lord of the Flies* type scene but stuck out in the middle of the ocean. Everything starts out as these warriors were trained to expect UNTIL the mermaids actually show their faces & all hell breaks loose in the blink of an eye. The characters are diverse & their choices prove more critical than beknownst to them. I did not feel as strongly about these characters as I have while reading other books lately, but they grew on me more & more. Eriana was fun to hear about. I would have liked to learn more about the island & it's traditions. The legend brought up in the very end is what really hooked me. I am really looking forward to reading more about that. I will keep my eye out for more books by this author.

*Lord of the Flies ~ a 1954 dystopian novel by Nobel Prize-winning English author William Golding later made into a movie 1963, later remade in 1990.
