The Moment That Made My Career as an Author Worthwhile...

Wow. That is a tough one. I'm Kayla Curry and I've been asked to tell you all about the moment that made my career as an author worthwhile. The thing is, there have been many moments and I couldn't possibly just pick one to write about, so I think this calls for a top 5 list!

5. The day I got the email telling me that a publisher had picked my book for publication.
I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing. I was at my husband's parent's house and we were all enjoying a nice evening in their living room, we were chatting and I decided to check my email on my Kindle Fire. Immediately, I noticed an email from a publisher I had submitted to and who had asked for my full manuscript. I opened it up and a bubbly feeling started in the pit of my stomach and rose up to my chest until I felt like I'd scream! I let the excitement dissipate just a little and proudly announced to the room that my novel had been selected for publishing. Everyone was very excited for me and we celebrated the rest of that evening.

4. The day my debut novel was finally published.
When Obsidian was picked up by my publisher, there were a few months of prepping the book, but when it was finally published and available for sale, I was ecstatic! I proudly showed it off and promoted the heck out of it.

3. The day I had my first book signing.
I set up a book signing event at a local bookstore. The owner of the store was amazing and I continue to have a great business relationship with her. People I didn't know were showing up and buying books. They were just as excited as I was and I couldn't believe how amazing the experience was. I read an excerpt from my book and they loved it so much that they couldn't wait to get home and read it!

2. The day I hired the editors and formatter for Where the Carnies Are.
Where the Carnies Are is my first self-published novel and I knew that I needed to have it edited, proof-read and professionally formatted in order to make it the best it could be. I knew exactly who I wanted for these jobs and I sent out emails to each one. All of them replied with a "yes" and I knew that Where the Carnies Are would be in great hands and that it would be epic!

1. The day and the week following the release of Where the Carnies Are.
I published Where the Carnies Are April 30th of this year and the week after, I celebrated with a fun event in which I invited people to dress like carnies in exchange for a free copy of the book. I also dressed up each day that week and we all had a blast doing it. I was amazed that people actually went to the trouble of dressing up and posting a picture. Their support is all I need to keep me going. My fans are so amazing and I am so grateful for them!
Kayla Curry lives in North Platte, Nebraska with her husband and two sons. She is always getting ideas for stories from random thoughts and places.

Writing has been part of her life since the beginning of high school. She was on the school paper for three years until her graduation in 2006. Journalism was an important part of learning who she was as a writer, but ultimately, Kayla’s creativity won over and she decided to write fiction short stories in her free time.

Eventually, a dream came to her and Obsidian was born. A short story grew into a novel in about six months, and is now begging to become a five book series.

There are many important people in her life that have helped shape Kayla into the author she is now. One of them being her mother, who always supported her. Her husband and his family are also an amazing support system along with her friends who got a sneak peek at Obsidian and her siblings who brag about their older sister to their friends.

In her free time, Kayla likes to do arts and crafts and also dabbles in knife throwing. As of late, her son and her writing take up most of her time, as well as preparing for a new addition to her family. She plans to continue writing even with a new baby in the family.
